School U 16 (B) Hurling Championship Ballyfin College was the venue for the opening round of the U 16 (B) hurling championship and Patrician College Ballyfin was the opposition . A victory fell easy to Portlaoise C.B.S with a final scoreline of Portlaoise C.B.S 4-7 Patrician College Ballyfin 2-6, a match that saw Barry Fitzgerald reach a personnel tally of 4-3. There were also some excellent performances from Keith Murphy, Sean Egan and Joe Gleeson on that day. In the next round Portlaoise C.B.S came up against close neighbours Heywood Community School. A scoreline of 5-11 to 1-4 told a story in itself with Barry Fitzgerald netting three times and Ross Gill and Keith Murphy putting them over the bar with ease. Following this Portlaoise C.B.S got a walkover from Cistercian College Roscrea. Portlaoise C.B.S had now gathered great momentum through the season with two impressive wins, but they were surely to meet their match in the shape of a south leinster final and Gorey C.B.S . This game was contested hugely by both teams, but Gorey C.B.S came out victorious on that day but not before 30 minutes of extra time. It was a well fought out battle with Portlaoise C.B.S trailing by four points at half-time. A stern talk from team trainers Mr Scully and Mr. Fitzpatrick saw the Portlaoise lads go out a different team after half time and they fought back well getting within a point of the leaders with only seconds to go, a pointed free from keith Murphy just before the whistle sent the game to a draw and extra time, but like the first half Gorey got off to a better start. Portlaoise C.B.S were now tiring and were defeated in the end. On the day and through the season there were some excellent performances from D. Mulhare in goals, K. Donovan, S. Egan , J. Gleeson and M .Phelan in the backs, also great performances from K. Murphy , B.Fitzgerald and R.Gill being consistent on the score sheet through the season. |
