 Hurling - Senior

C.B.S. SENIOR HURLING

Although it was an unfruitful year for the senior hurlers it would be fair to say that they did have some success. The campaign started on an uncertain note with a defeat from F.L.J. Bunclody in their home venue. But the boys did not take this defeat lying down. They beat Cellbridge in a close game in Portlaoise under very difficult conditions. It was obvious the side that started off shaky were starting to pick things up. The Foot and Mouth crisis took its toll on the game fixtures with many matches and indeed training being postponed. Word from Cellbridge must have put fear into the Mullingar side as they forfeited their match against Portlaoise. Hence, the team who were underdogged by many qualified into the Leinster quarter final. With very little training and a great gap in post-poned matches-(Foot & Mouth), the team had to play practise matches against local teams more to the point-Ballyfin. They played this match with many injuries leaving the main movers in the team on the sideline. Ballyfin may have won a match in sub-zero temperatures-(Europe was in the grips of a record temperature drop)-but, Portlaoise were still in contention for a Leinster final. Emotions were high in the huddle before the game against Gorey C.S. One of the countrys most highly rated teams-Once again sheer passion & determination won through with Portlaoise winning by a single point. The team who nobody had even rated were now in the Leinster semi final all out of heart and of course not to mention their experienced mentors Mr. Fitzpatrick & Mr. Scully. Nolan park was the venue and the opposing team was Callan C.B.S. The Kilkenny side were shocked. It seemed that the team dominated the entire first half unfortunately came out the victim in a thrilling game. They see themselves as winners and indeed can still hold their heads high. With many young hurlers on the team-I’m sure they will be back next year to keep the good spirit of hurling alive in the school. Good luck to them all I’m sure they’ll do well.
